The Gathering

Ten slender figures stand along a rough horizon between a glowing, cracked gold sky and a quiet grey plain. Six are painted black and four wear white, and each trails a long reflection into the ground below. Quick calligraphic strokes in the foreground read like ripples or footprints. A calm meditation on being together while staying individual.

The Gathering by Avyukt Ohri, an acrylic on canvas (34″ × 22″) divides the surface into two horizontal fields: a glowing, crackled mustard-gold sky above and a heavy, cool slate-grey ground below. The meeting point is a rough, hand-drawn dark line that sits just under the middle of the canvas, giving the whole composition a quiet, expansive stillness.

Across that horizon stand ten slender, elongated figures, spaced unevenly like people scattered across an open plain. Six are rendered in solid black, and four wear pale white, small flashes of difference within the group. Some face us, some turn away, and some seem to look toward the light. Their bodies taper into long, narrow reflections that stretch down into the grey, so each figure seems to stand on the surface of still water or wet ground. No two are quite alike in height or posture, which gives the group a sense of individuality within a shared space.

The grey foreground is worked with quick, calligraphic strokes of black, dashes and flicks that suggest ripples, footprints, or the restless texture of earth after rain. Tiny flecks of red-orange and teal hide among them like stray sparks. The golden sky is weathered and tactile, its fine cracks recalling aged leather or sun-baked soil, and it pours a warm, almost sacred light over the scene. A hint of blue wash gathers at the lower right edge.
