Fern of Fire
A vertical spine of orange and black, shaped like a fern frond, a feather or a fishbone, runs down the center of the paper. Short, rhythmic strokes branch out from it on both sides, creating a strong pattern that feels almost graphic.
To the left, deep blue strokes suggest water or night, while to the right, warm yellow and green fill the space. The colors are bold and the contrast is strong, so the central form seems to glow like embers against its surroundings.
Painted on paper, the work has a fresh, direct quality. It is a lively composition that plays with repetition and symmetry, and it shows an eye for pattern as well as color.
