Lotus at Dusk
A cluster of pink and crimson lotus flowers rises from tall green stems on the right side of the canvas. Their pointed petals are outlined and shaded in deeper magenta, so each bloom looks crisp against the softer background. Behind them, the sky glows in streaks of golden amber and ochre, as if the last of the sunlight is catching the flowers.
The left side of the painting is cooler and moodier. A wash of turquoise blue fills the sky, scuffed and speckled for an atmospheric, weathered look. Dark, smoky strokes of charcoal and black build up along the edge, like a shadowed treeline or a rocky bank. This pulls the eye toward the warm flowers.
In the foreground, a pool of deep indigo and cobalt water takes up the lower half. Thick, broken strokes of pale blue and white make the surface shimmer, as though a breeze is moving across it. A thin band of lilac and pink along the water’s edge ties the flowers to their reflection.
The painting balances warm and cool, light and shadow, and calm water against vivid growth. Lotus flowers often stand for renewal and for beauty that rises out of murky water, which gives the scene a quiet, hopeful mood. The layered, textured brushwork gives the surface depth and rewards a closer look.
