Where the Tide Meets Stillness
Seen from directly above, a small wooden rowboat with its oars extended floats through a channel of luminous turquoise water. To the left, the sea falls away into deep navy and near-black, flecked with white foam. To the right, a sweep of pale, cream-toned shoreline is built up in thick, sculptural impasto. Its ridges and furrows catch the light like windswept sand or ice.
The boat’s warm brown hull is the only strong warm note in a cool palette, so the eye goes to it first. Its long shadow stretches into the water below, and the swirling surf around it suggests a gentle current. The contrast between the dark, turbulent water and the calm, textured shore gives the work a quiet tension between movement and stillness, journey and arrival.
Layered strokes and visible tool marks give the surface a tactile quality that rewards close viewing. The composition feels both intimate and vast: one small vessel set against the scale of the sea.
